06-Apr-2007 - My wife and I found ourselves in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, this past Friday, and since this CP was close and hadn't been visited for several years, we decided to check it out. Actually, I suggested it, and she was kind enough to permit the detour!

The most significant change between our visit and the previous visit is the wind damage to the surrounding forest, ostensibly from Hurricane Katrina, but I can't be certain. While the trees visible from the CP were fine, on Patterson Road and on the road that passes the CP, there were many trees with 15-20 degrees of lean, and they were all leaning in the same direction.

The road that took me directly to the CP was not on my 2006 Delorme software, but in preparing for the trip, I knew that the turnoff was immediately south of the S-bend in Patterson Road. The weather was beautiful, crisp air and blue skies. As we approached the CP, there was a tall, thin, pine tree that had bent all the way over and was pointing almost directly at the spot where I found all zeros on the GPS. I found to spot to be on the road, on the northern half, about two feet from the edge of the road. After taking our photos, we enjoyed the peace and quiet of De Soto National Forest for about 10 minutes, then took our leave and returned to Hattiesburg for an early dinner.
