#1: Looking to the north

(visited by Craig Hall)

21-Jul-2007 -- I traveled south from Salt Lake City, Utah on I-15 to Exit 244 in Santaquin, Utah. Once in Santaquin, I headed west on Hwy 6 until I turned north on Hwy 68 in Elberta. I turned left (northwest) on Elberta Slant Road (marked as 14600 South - see picture 7). I turned north on the power line road and generally followed the directions of the prior visitors. Although a couple of prior visitors stated the last dirt road heading west towards the confluence requires a high-clearance vehicle, none was needed on this trip. The dirt road was in pretty good shape and was simple for my little Honda Accord.

The confluence is within 10 feet of the dirt road. I took the pictures and admired the landscape. It was very hot, so I didn’t stay long. The GPS zeroed out with an accuracy of eight feet. I saw the cairn and stick (which is now lying on the ground) mentioned by some of the other visitors (picture 6). I also saw a jackrabbit dart in front of me during my short stay.

On the way back to Salt Lake, I figured it might be quicker to stay on Hwy 68 all the way back to Salt Lake County. I was right. Not only was it a lot quicker, it also had much better scenery (with Utah Lake off to your east) than along I-15, which I’ve seen dozens of times. If someone is coming from the Salt Lake area, I would definitely recommend Hwy 68 (if one keeps following Redwood Road towards the south, it suddenly turns into Hwy 68) all the way to "Elberta Slant Road". It is a beautiful drive.
