03-Oct-2007 -- Vacation seemed like a perfect time to visit my first confluence. 39N 123W was my destination. I left my weekend home in the city of Clear Lake at 0730 and headed south on SR 53. At the south end of Clear Lake I headed north on SR 29 toward Lakeport. In Lakeport I headed west on SR 175 and following the directions on my GPS unit turned right on a dirt road approximately 5 miles from Lakeport. Driving for 0.5 mile on the dirt road I came to a large clearing and a locked gate. It was time to start walking. I was still 0.7 mile from the confluence.
Continuing on foot I hiked another 0.3 mile on the dirt road and found a wash through the thick brush that was between me and the confluence. Pushing through the manzanita and sage brush was no easy task but I made it to the other side and another dirt road. I followed the road to the top of a small hill and found a large clearing. I was less than 100 feet above the confluence. Walking down a slight incline I reached the confluence point at 0900.
I took the photographs and marveled at the view of Clear Lake on this clear autumn mourning. After spending 20 minutes at the confluence point it was time to head back.
The hike back to my vehicle was mostly down hill and uneventful.
My first attempt at locating a confluence point was a success and a very fulfilling journey. I look forward to more attempts in the future.
