07-Aug-2011 -- My mother is visiting from Western Australia so we went for a day trip to see Trial Bay Gaol, near South West Rocks. My wife is in the USA visiting picturesque Pennsylvania, big old barns and Amish, so these thoughts were in my head as we drove through the flood plains of Kinchela and Jerseyville, houses and sheds built on mounds to protect them from the floodwaters. Not as beautiful perhaps but very interesting, and with a few real treasures. We spent the day at the gaol, had a picnic by the beach, saw whales from the cliff tops migrating south and then on the way home went looking for the confluence point.

I knew the point would be reasonably close to the road between Kinchela and Gladstone so we just drove along, our only guide the numbers on the GPS, watching them slowly climbing and falling. We mistakenly followed Kinchela Creek Left Rd, winding alongside Kinchela Creek getting closer and then dropping away until finally, after a very circuitous route we were right on the latitude and needed a right turn to get the little extra distance to the east. Right on cue we came across Fairweathers Lane. A few hundred metres down we were within 100m of the point. It was in the middle of a cow paddock.

Very much in keeping with the surrounding country the paddock was flat, with a few trees and a small swale drain. The walk to the point was muddy and required crossing the swale. My only company for taking the photos were the cows, the others decided to wait in the car – you can see the car parked near the trees in the photo to the north. Although the flash went off, making it hard to read the GPS screen in the photo, I was happy that I got 5 zeroes for each the latitude and longitude – the maximum accuracy I could get with my GPS.
