02-Août-2011 -- Au cours d'un voyage en Islande, nous passons tout près de la confluence 64N 17W. Elle est à 2.7 km au nord de la route N1, dans un sandar. C'est une immense zone plate de sédiments glaciaires venus du glacier Skeiðarárjökull.

Il y a beaucoup de bras de rivière qui coulent dans cette plaine et ils changent souvent d'endroit. Depuis la N1, une piste part vers le nord, vers le glacier. Arrivés à 500 m du point, il faut partir à pieds dans la plaine de galets de basalte et de graviers. Malheureusement, il a beaucoup plu ces derniers jours et nous sommes bloqués par une rivière à environ 75 m du point. Le courant et le débit sont assez forts, et ça ne semble vraiment pas prudent de traverser à pieds.

Près du point se trouvent la belle chute d'eau de Svartifoss, entourée de colonnes basaltiques, et les restes d'un des trois ponts emportés en 1996 par une énorme crue glaciaire provoquée par une éruption du volcan Grimsvötn. Impressionnant, quand on voit la taille des poutres d'acier tordues…

02-Aug-2011 -- During a trip in Iceland, we pass very close to the point 64N 17W. It is 2.7 km north of the road N1, in a sandar. It is a vast plain of glacial sediments from the glacier Skeiðarárjökull.

There are many small and large arms of rivers in this plain and they often change place. From the road N1, a track goes north towards the glacier. 500 m from the point, we stop and we go by foot in the plain of rounded stones and gravels. Unfortunately, it rained much these last days, and we are stopped by a river at about 75 m from the point. The current and the flow are high, and that doesn't seem careful to cross to feet.

Not far from the point are the nice waterfall Svartifoss, surrounded by basaltic columns, and the ruins of one of the three bridges destroyed in 1996 by an enormous glacial flooding caused by an eruption of the Grimsvötn volcano. Impressive when you see the size of the twisted steel bars...
