08-May-2004 -- We had previously thought this confluence was out of reach since it is in the the path of one of the great rivers of the country. The flow of the river is usually around 100 m3/s and can go as high as 45000 m3/s (5. November 1996). This can be compared to the Rhine which has an average discharge of 2190 m3/s.

We could hardly believe our luck when we read in the news on the 20. April 2004 that the riverbed was almost dry. The moving glacier Skeiðarárjökul has retracted so the water that usually goes to Skeidará now goes to Gígjukvísl and Núpavötn they are larger than usual.

We arrived in the Skaftafell national park around 21:00 and we had to hurry because the daylight was fading fast. We were able to drive the car to within 500 meters from the confluence. We decided to leave the car running and all doors open to be prepeared if the glacier would lift and a tidal wave would come at high speed.

After a walk of 200m towards the confluence, we had to wade over what was left of the Skeidará river propably around 6- 10 m3/s and a smaller stream 100 m further. The water was just above the knees but to our surprise it was not as cold as expected. Then we arrived on the confluence in the twilight. The terrain there is the usual glacier riverbed, sand with pebbles and round stones.
