12-Oct-2011 -- This would be the ninth of eleven confluence visits on a trip to Colorado coming from 37N 104W.

I had driven in the dark the night before and parked a couple miles north of this spot where I would get some sleep. I drove to point almost due west of the confluence and began my day by walking into a brilliant orange sunrise. It would take almost an hour to reach the confluence. It was mostly easy going but I did have to find a better place to cross a couple of steep ravines. I could see my van for most of my hike as well as the Spanish Peaks I had passed the day before. Pikes Peak was visible to the northwest. The only sounds I heard were geese formations overhead. At the confluence, I received notifications on my iPad that a secure wireless network was available – here in middle of nowhere. Wow! I started my data recording, sent another SPOT message declaring success and took my pictures.

Pathfinder Office Post Processing reduced 652 data points from my Trimble Juno to an average position of 38° 00’ 00.02930”N, 103° 59’ 59.98309”W with a horizontal precision of 2.7 meters and an altitude of 1365.757 meters with a vertical precision of 2.0 meters.

My round trip hike from where I parked along County Road 2/CO-167 here was 8.1 km and took just under two hours including the time I spent at the confluence. There was a dirt road south of where I parked (that I followed for awhile on the way back) but I couldn’t figure out the gate or where I would park so decided that a hike would be easier from where I ended up parking.
