  40°N 111°W (visit #6)

#1: View north

(visited by Shawn Fleming)

01-Jul-2013 -- This would be the sixth in a westward line of confluences along 40N. We were coming from 40N 110W and had spent the previous night in Price, Utah. We were westbound on US-6 just prior to the town of Soldier Summit shortly after sunrise when we turned right onto FR 131 here and then continued east onto FR081 here both sides of the road had private property signs until we entered the Uinta National Forest and turned left onto FR147 when we reached to top of the ridge where we were between the Uinta and Ashley National Forests here. We continued north until we were 400 meters east of the point and hiked the rest of the way.

We found the confluence by following a small double track and then passing through a small grove of aspen and conifers and an elevation of 9005 feet. The terrain was sloped to the southwest and was covered with small shrubs and bright green bunch grasses. There were also several patches of wildflowers but nothing like we had seen earlier in our trip.

I took several pictures and started logging GPS positions and sent our Spot message announcing our successful visit for everybody that was monitoring our progress. We made it back to the vehicle and had an enjoyable drive back down to Soldiers Summit.

Post processing of the GPS data reveals that my Trimble collected data 0.3 meters southwest of the actual confluence with a horizontal precision of 3.0 meters.

We had thought that this would be a possible candidate to ride our ATV’s but the road itself was very well maintained. As long as your vehicle doesn’t have low clearance, a typical car should be able to follow the same routing we did. Total round trip time off US-40 at Myton was 2:00 and 33.7 km. Total round trip time for the hike portion was only 0:34 for 920 meters.

It was now time to head south towards home but not before visiting a few more confluences. A year ago, I had aborted an attempt to visit 39N 111W as a result of insufficient planning.

This time, we were prepared for 39N 111W!
