28-Jul-2015 -- One of the things that I enjoy about participating in the Degree Confluence Project is that it inadvertently exposes me to interesting places that I would not otherwise have visited. Today, I was driving from Graz to Linz. If I had simply driven there directly, I would have stayed on a motorway. Instead, I made a detour to visit this Degree Confluence Point, and discovered a beautiful alpine valley: The Ybbs River Valley. (Who, outside of Austria, has even heard of the Ybbs River?)

After a lot of driving along beautiful, but narrow country roads (encountering several crazy Austrian drivers going too fast on these narrow roads), I arrived at the point, which lies in a patch of brush, just inside a barbed-wire fence. Just beyond the fence was a small pond, where a man was fishing. The man was confused about why I was taking photos, so I showed him my GPS receiver’s display. He pointed out that the "Meridianstein” was nearby, so I walked there next. The "Meridianstein” was actually about 91 m from the true (WGS84) confluence point; it was presumably positioned using a different datum - but still would (barely) count as a successful visit for this project.

After visiting this point, I continued northwards to visit the beautiful Melk Stift (monastery), and then on to Linz.
