18-Dec-1999 -- Note to self: No more off-roading in
a two-wheel drive pickup. I had been planning this confluence visit for
awhile, and it seemed that it was going to be a lot easier to get there
than it was. I mean, the maps showed these lines that looked like paved
roads that would take us to within a mile of the confluence, and then
we'd have a little hike to get there. Those lines were indeed roads, but
most of it was this well-driven-upon soft sand for a really annoying 15
miles ("how much farther, Kelly?" "12.6 miles." 15
minutes later, "how
much farther Kelly?" "12.1 miles." Then we got to
the "road" which would
take us to the site, which was more like a couple of ruts. I pushed the
F-150 well beyond its limits as an SUV till we came to the spot from
which we'd walk. It was a beautiful day, and the isolation of this area
was really cool. Shortly before the confluence, we found the shell of
the endangered desert tortoise which served as our mascot for the rest
of the hike. About 50 meters west of the confluence was a BLM
range/township marker.
As we started the hike back to the car I made another note to myself:
when hiking in the desert, always remember where you left the car.
