20-Nov-2001 -- Finding accessible confluences in eastern Australia is getting harder and requires longer trips. Working on a new major telecommunication cable route took me near a few confluences that had already been visited but after three days on the road I was pleased to find my GPS showing that an unclaimed one was nearby.
Travelling through Goonoo State Forest towards Dubbo brought me closer and in the general direction of the point. It didn’t take much to convince Simon and Jeremy, the two engineers I was working with to make a slight detour and engage in a little exploration. At 8 kilometres Mt Carl Rd, a good forestry trail, lead from the main road in the direction of our target. Following this brought us to within 160 metres of the confluence but to reach the exact point we had to push through the dense undergrowth of young casuarina plants that indicated a bushfire had been through in the last year or two.
It only took a few minutes to find the point, take the photos and get back to work. Unfortunately I managed to get two blurred pictures of the GPS showing all the zeros but to make up for that we were lucky enough to see a mallee fowl, a large endangered ground dwelling bird, on our way back to the road.
