27-Dec-2001 -- Kookabookra, NSW
Continued from 29ºS 152ºE.
Heading down the New England Highway from Tenterfield, we turned off shortly after Glen Innes on Red Range Road.
About 40 kilometres later, we were nearing the confluence at a locality called ‘Kookabookra’ which I though was quite a funny name given that I’m an accountant and know a thing or two about cooking the books.
There was a drive-way heading more-or-less straight to the confluence which took us to a farmhouse. I spoke with the gentleman in picture #6 who advised me that this was actually his brother’s farm but said there was no problem with us trekking across it to get to the confluence.
We parked the car next to the farmhouse which was about 900 metres from the confluence. We were at about 1200 metres altitude here in the tablelands so it was relatively cool (somewhere in the mid-twenties I think) so we decided that we would all do the walk to the confluence.
Jamie and I lead the way with Ada and Vicky bringing up the rear. The confluence was near the top of a ridge on the other side of a fence near a couple of large trees.
Predicably, I wound up carrying Vicky on my shoulders for the walk back to the car – but at least I had some water with me this time (refer to 30ºS 150ºE for a waterless trek I did three days ago).
