16-Mar-2002 -- It was only a few days after we learned of the existence of the confluence project that we attempted a visit to the 49N71W confluence which is located in an area that we visit several times per year, on snowmobile in the winter (a 90km ride north of Chicoutimi), and on ATV's in the summer. It is located within the boundaries of ZEC Onatchiway, a skidoo heaven where it is common to meet skidoo addicts from as far as the northern US states that go up there to practice their favorite sport as early as mid-november.

OK, so for those who know the area, 49N71W is on top of a montain a few hundred meters north of 'Lac de l'Equerre', or 4km south-west of 'Lac Ross'. The trail that goes to Lac Ross passes 1.15km east of the confluence, and this is the closest that we got to the confluence.

Actually, we were a bit too optimistic: we were hoping to get to the confluence on our skidoos by following a river for several kilometers up to the top of the mountain... we were thinking like real tourists! ;-) The density of the trees combined with the fact that we were riding Touring vehicules forced us to turn back several kilometers away from our objective (a Toundra would have had more chances to make it). We're still confident that we'll make it eventually, sometimes in the next few months.

But this was still one of our best skidoo rides of the winter, with 6 to 8 inches of fresh now, temperature around -10C and this huge spring sun shining in the sky... the cat's ass! :
