04-May-2003 -- Visiting this confluence was possible as I was traveling right past it while negotiating Goog’s Track. This track runs between Ceduna, South Australia, and Malboona Outstation, about 38km west of Tarcoola. Read more about this track by visiting the Goog’s Track page at www.exploroz.com.
I traveled from south to north, definitely the way to go. The sand dunes were much easier to drive up in this south-north direction.
The confluence is near the major feature of Mount Finke. John McDouall Stuart named Mt Finke in August 1858, writing in his diary “nothing meets the eye save a dense scrub as black and dismal as midnight... a fearful country”.
I camped near Mt Finke and walked to the confluence on Sunday 4 May, 2003. It was an easy walk through light scrub. The sand was reasonably easy to walk on in this area. Brilliant views of Mt Finke can be seen from the crests of sand hills in the vicinity.
