12-May-2003 -- We're off on holiday (vacation) again, so of course the first element of planning is to check this web site for points along the way that I have yet to visit. A quick look shows that the route we will be taking passes within four miles of this point.

It's a long way from home and cross-country as well, those of you familiar with the UK will know that N-S routes are reasonably good, while the E-W ones tend to be narrower poorer quality roads. The only unvisited points for me in the UK are all at least three hours drive away, the furthest are over 600 miles - this one is only around 180 as the proverbial crow flies.

Up at 6am and pack the car, hitting the road for 8am and straight into the morning rush hour, slow but steady progress. Fifty miles and two hours later we are searching for a McD's for breakfast - a search that was to prove in vain until we came across one some six hours later and two hundred miles further on!

After another hour and a half I pulled up in front of the cottages described by the previous visitor and of course it had by now begun to rain. I called at the house nearest the path - nobody in. Pop next door. I was met by a very sprightly old lady who informed me that it took her a while to get to the door as she was well into her eighties - she didn't look a day over sixty!

Her husband (deceased) had worked the farm all his life and they had lived in the cottage for over forty years, she now lived rent free for life. The house round the corner was the daughter of the farm owner, I could try there.

The only occupant of the house was a small dog - well, I tried very hard to get permission. Following the "Country Code" of 'close gates behind you, unless they were already open' I made my way into the empty field and quickly found the spot.
