#1: Looking at the confluence from 4000 feet, *sigh*

(visited by Dennis Brown)

24-Apr-1999 -- This past April 24th turned out to an incredibly gorgeous day here in the Washington, DC area, so I decided to take a day trip down to Smith Island, Maryland, the location of this confluence.

I boarded one of the passenger ferries at Crisfield with about 16 other passengers and we were soon on our way across the dozen or so miles separating our destination from the mainland. I had high hopes of setting out on foot via whatever road might take me the closest to the confluence, but my hopes faded as I learned more about the true nature of the island. Not only is it divided across the southern end by the Maryland/Virginia state line, but the northern third or so is not even connected to the rest of the island. I was in need of a boat and more time than I had, if I were to catch the only remaining return ferry back to my car. If I were to miss it, I'd have to to spend the whole night, and I wasn't prepared for that. So I wandered some of the roads looking for items of interest and was buzzed a few times by a group teenagers joyriding in one of the few cars on the island. By the way, the ferry does not carry any vehicles out to the island, only passengers. Nevertheless, it was an interesting visit. I plan to go back and try again, but perhaps someone will get there before me. It might be you!
