(visited by Jonathan Beck, Jody Turner and Jaime Nies)
03-Feb-2001 -- We decided to visit the confluence N38 W92 since it was
one of the closest to our home base of Columbia/Fulton Missouri, and the
confluence didn't look too far off of a road. As we were approaching
the area, we began to second guess our goal due to the many
"KILL" painted trees within one mile of the confluence. An
example of the sign is in picture #3. Luckily, when we rounded the bend
on the road near the confluence, the signs were no longer on the
property and a large cow pasture emerged before our eyes. To be safe,
we decided to go up the driveway of the nearest farmhouse to check with
the landowner. Here, we were met by several billy goats, dogs and
geese. We also met Linda, the land owner. We explained what we were
doing and asked if she owned the land, which she did. We invited her to
accompany us to the point. She was glad to learn that her property
contained a geographically significant point. We walked across the
pasture past several cows (see picture #4) and quickly found the
confluence near the tree line. The confluence rests about 100 feet
north of a small creek, and about 200 feet south of the nearest road,
and 1 foot from the nearest cow pie. Picture #1 shows (l-r) Linda, Jon,
Jody, and Sheila the GPS dog at the confluence. Picture #5 shows Jaime,
Jon and Jody and Sheila. This visit was the second for Jon and Sheila,
and the first for Jody and Jaime, and Linda too for that matter. After
visiting with Linda for a while, we headed for home. |
