17-Apr-2003 -- About midway into our “W” trek of the Torres Del Paine Circuit we figured we’d try and find 51S 73W.

Again we were lead astray by our maps. We had anticipated that the confluence would be just off shore of Lago Nordenskold. However when we got closer to the confluence we realized that it was actually on one of the Cuernos. Every hiker who traverses the trail between Campamento Italiano and Hosteria Las Torres passes within about 1.3 miles from the confluence.

As we started up the mountain in an effort to locate the confluence we realized we would be fighting the coming night if we were to press onward to Hosteria Las Torres. We got to within 750 meters of the confluence but decided to turn back and continue with our trek. It was a good thing as we arrived just as the last bit of twilight was fleeting.

We determined that the confluence lies on the southern edge of Ceurnos Este (Eastern Horn). Unfortunately our photo of the GPS was blurry beyond recognition, but we think the photos speak for themselves. We fully intend to return to Torres Del Paine and complete the confluence. We even have a route scoped out for the ascent. However, we’ll keep that to ourselves, for now.

All in all Parque Nacional Torres del Paine is one of the most spectacular national parks we have visited.
