19-Feb-2004 --
I left home at 5.30 this morning for the 120 mile drive down to this point. About 10 miles or so from the CP you pass this geographic feature, the Punchbowl at Cheesehead Foot
This was the site of telegraph station back in the 1820's, was (apparently) the site from which Eisenhower spoke to the troops before D-Day and since 1981 has been the site of numerous crop circles, it is also mentioned here.
I am waiting at the services area just off the A3 at the Petersfield junction, as I am early for my meeting with Spencer and Elliot from the BBC. Technically I have done the visit already as I drove past the site on the way and the road passes within 50m of the CP.
Half an hour and a cup of coffee later and we pull into the farm yard and park up out of the way. We have arranged to meet the landowner (who by the way is not Mr. Keevil) to explain our mission and get formal permission to film.
It was pointed out that this is a commercial working farm and that we would have to fit around the days activities - which included a visit by the vet to attend to some cows due to calf.
Now I can normally do a visit including all documentation photographs in under 30 minutes - naively I thought this would be the same. Television documentaries are a bit more demanding!
We decamped to a field opposite to do the scene setting, only took 2 hours. I must admit I have a LOT more respect for items I now see on television.
Having got those done we went back to the farm yard and met up with Mr Keevil where Spencer went amongst the cows to stand "on the spot" as it were.
We then had a visit from Neil (sorry, I didn't get the surname) who is a technical representative from Garmin. Neil brought along one of their new units -- all I can say is "I WANT ONE!"
I concluded the visit with cardinal point pictures: North, East, South, West (showing the marker plaque that Han's left) and the GPS montage.
The item is due to broadcast early in March (on Satellite and worldwide) it will also be available to view from the web.
21-Feb-2004 -- Coordinator's Note: This is a commercial working farm, and has been well-documented. Since our visits interfere with operations, further visits are discouraged.
