  50°N 10°E (visit #6)

#1: confluence 50°N 10°E

(visited by Daniel Zwick)

22-Jul-2004 -- After two long confluence-bike-trips in June, confluence 50°N 10°E was first the next on my list of points I would like to reach with the bicycle from Ilmenau. But the end of the semester in university was so busy, that there was no time for the tour anymore before I moved out of Ilmenau end of July.

The idea for this confluence-visit was now a very spontaneous one. During breakfast, I had a look on the map which Autobahn I should choose for the way home with the van to the black-forest. In this moment I remembered 50°N 10°E, located only a few kilometers away from the Autobahn near Schweinfurt.

After a busy morning when we load all my stuff from my room in the van, I finally spent my lunch break at the confluence during this nice and warm summer day on the way home. The point is very easy to reach, I left the Autobahn at cross Schweinfurt/Werneck and followed the street to Arnstein. You pass the confluence ca. 250m away on the way, but you have to follow the road to the end and come back on a small track along some fields. The way is signed by 'Schnittpunktsdenkmal'.

I left the car at the monument, which is ca. 225m away from the real confluence and walked in a lane between two fields to the spot. The exact location is finally in a rape field. At the time of my visit, the rape field was already withered and large parts have been damaged during thunderstorms. I was surprised when I saw, that the last 50 meters were very easy to find – I could just follow a small path from previous visitors. With this nice confluence visit, some new pictures and the first feeling of holidays, I continued my way to the south over crowded German highways.
