(visited by Thomas Barthel)

14-Jul-2024 -- On a week-long trip to Ireland I was able to visit three confluence points.

The last one, Confluence Point 53°N 9°W, is in the county Clare, west of Ireland. On this day trip we came along the northwest coast. At the northernmost tip of Clare, at the light house of "Black Head", we saw five dolphins close to the shore! Now we aimed the Confluence Point which is located in the "Burren National Park". So we took road R480 south, passed Killinaboy and reached the area of the Confluence Point on very small, but paved roads. There are no villages in this area, just individual, widely scattered farms. We parked the car, beeline 1,1 km to the Confluence point, in front of a gate to private property . From there I set off on foot. No one seemed to be there. So I jumped over the gate, passed the very desolate looking property quite soon and followed a trail. It was heavily overgrown with a mixture of trees and bushes. On half of the distance I switched off the track and followed the direct direction to the intended CP. This was a mistake. From now on it was a very thorny path with a very rough, rocky ground. After climbing over a wall about 1 m high, I found myself in a completely different landscape. Now it was the typical "Burren" with only small plants, peeking out of the rock crevices of the grey stone floor. This wall may be the boundary of the "Burren National Park". Now the walking was going well and soon I was right at the Confluence Point 53°N 9°W. The mountain Mullagh More is clearly visible in the photo to the north. Immediately after taking the photos it started to rain. But since it was not too strong, I soon reached the car, this time finding an easier way back by taking a track. Even on the way back no one to be seen on the property I had to cross.

Happy about my third visit of a Confluence Point in Ireland and the last one during this holidays, we set off on the long way back to Kerry, but not without a refreshment stop in Durty Nelly's, a Pub in Bunratty, which I can highly recommend.
