12-Apr-2001 -- While planning the route for my trip to the
easterHegg hacker convention in
Hamburg, I saw on the map that the Autobahn gets quite near to 53N/10E. So I
decided to start a few hours earlier (so it won't be too late in the evening)
and visit this confluence, and also the two friends travelling with me in the
car were interested.
Of course we didn't start as early as planned and there has been also much more
traffic on the road than I had expected, so it already was 8PM when we got into
the area. We used two 15 year old hiking maps of the area on which we found a
quite short route from the Autobahn to the confluence point, which seemed to be
approximately at a bridge crossing a railroad, next to a prohibited training
area of the Bundeswehr (German army) - we hoped it would be outside (which it
was).
Following the GPSs directions we drove into a way leading to a private
property, invitingly decorated with balloons, so we assumed there would be a
party and so nobody would notice or disturb us tracking down the confluence.
But parking near the house we saw people inside the house watching us
critically, and a minute later the owner came out and asked us what we were
doing. We explained that we want to document a degree confluence and asked him
if we could park our car for about 15 minutes on his property, but he didn't
really understand why someone would be interested in such a confluence point
and explained that there would often be burglars in the area and therefore he
doesn't like strangers on his ground.
OK, so we had to leave (without stealing anything) and tried to approach the
confluence from another direction, parked our car on the other side of the
railway just opposite the house, and finally found it on the other side of the
street (SE corner of the crossing), in the forest just underneath the
embankment of the street. But meanwhile it had become even later after sunset,
so it was difficult to take good photos (so please excuse the bad picture
quality...). But at least we got an perfect all-zero reading on the GPS :)
