#1: Confluence falls within shadow of this sign

(visited by Shawn Fleming, Sue Fleming and Big Eddy)

12-Feb-2007 -- This was the fourth of seven confluences on a trip out to Portland to see my sister.

Returning from 45-124 we were south on I-5. It was my second time through this confluence today. This confluence may be one of the most frequently visited because both directions of I-5 pass within 100 meters of the zeropoint. I had looked at several Oregon Department of Transportation links and websites trying to find a real-time traffic count to insert here as a hyperlink. Although I couldn’t find the volume for this particular area, roughly 50,000 people per day travel I-5 near Salem. I was looking for data near milepost 259.8 - I also discovered that you can virtually travel along all of Oregon’s major roads through pictures taken almost every 53 feet!

We got off at exit 260B, Kaizer Blvd, and then immediately got back onto the on-ramp and stopped abeam and less than 5 meters from the confluence. Since it was almost rush hour, traffic was really starting to pick up. I would not have much time to do the confluence dance – especially with my Trimble.

A helpful Highway Patrolman was entering traffic and noticed me in the middle of the on-ramp dancing with a camera and GPS, he stopped and asked if we needed any help – I said no – I was just taking a couple pictures and would soon be on my way. That seemed to satisfy his curiosity and he continued on.

My first picture shows the billboard that could fall over and almost hit the confluence. Picture #2 looks north up the on-ramp to I-5. Picture #3 looks east along the 45th parallel. Picture #4 looks south down the on-ramp onto I-5. Picture #5 looks west. Picture #6 shows that magic reading of all zeros on my GPS.

Onward to 46-123!
