#1: Looking east at the confluence

(visited by Ada Kerman)

01-Feb-2004 -- This was my first confluence visit, back in 1998, and one of the first 15 visits in the United States. At the time, I didn't have a GPS, so I navigated using USGS topographic maps. I decided to go back and see how close I'd gotten.

The confluence is in Keizer, Oregon, very close to I-5. I parked at the Keizer Little League ballpark (N 45.00110°, W123.00200°) and set out. I soon decided that I'd liked the parking lot I found in '98 better as I was on the other side of a highway from the confluence. However, there were train tracks that crossed the highway and no trains were coming. I walked along the tracks and across the railway bridge. A brief scramble up the embankment led me to the triangle of land my friend and I had visited before. It seemed to be more overgrown than I remembered, with tall grasses in spots as well as numerous hummocks where formerly tall grasses had fallen over, leaving unsteady footing.

I soon determined that the confluence was to the east of this triangle, towards I-5 (as I'd deduced in '98). This time, though, I found that someone had cut open the chain-link fence just about at 45 north, so I went through. This led me to the south-bound on-ramp to I-5, and traffic was light enough that I crossed it. According to my GPS, with an accuracy of 14 feet, the confluence is on the on-ramp. I proceeded to the other side of the road for safety and took my pictures.

Unfortunately, the only camera I had available was a Polaroid, which has a mind of its own when it comes to focusing. The GPS picture did not come out at all and the others are all rather blurry. Picture one looks south towards where the on-ramp merges with I-5. Picture two looks west towards the triangle of grass I came through. Picture three looks north. My original photo to the east caught a car in the picture, which is perfectly appropriate to the location, but my film speed was too slow for it to look good, so I took a new photo from the western side of the on-ramp, picture four.

Walking around the triangle of grass, I found the approximate location of my previous visit, and determined that it was within about 50 meters of the confluence, confirming that it still counts as a successful visit.

It is possible to visit the confluence when getting on to I-5 south, but I don't recommend stopping your car to take pictures!

Coordinator's note: Because of the poor quality of the photos, this visit has been classified as incomplete.
