#1: The spot

(visited by Gordon Spence)

27-Aug-2010 -- It's funny how life goes sometimes isn't it? Seven years pass between repeat visits and then you come back 15 days later...

I have just come from my second only visit to 52N-05W and it is a long drive home, so to break the monotony I decide to come back here again. I parked up and this time there was no reception committee.

Before going into the quarry I noticed that there was a concrete building next to the slip road with boarded up windows. The door is long gone and it is now used as a wood store - wonder who for? Just inside the door is the remains of what I'm guessing is an old fuel pump.

That's not what I am here for though is it? Walk up the access road to the gate. This quarry although long closed, has the two new thousand litre oil storage tanks and there is evidence of people being here. Someone was here in the last 15 days as the door to the office has been wedged closed with a piece of stone.

If you wander back towards the edge of the rock face, someone has placed a semi circle of stones, some of which must have been moved by machine. Yet another different type of CP guardians.

It is a warm sunny evening, as opposed to the early cloudy morning of my last visit, but there has been a lot of rain in the last couple of days. I set off along the path expecting to get wet but it seems that the water runs off easily around here.

If you go just past the CP area you will see this large pile of rocks, wonder why? Clearly not spill from the workings, the rocks are either too small or too large depending on which way you look at it. Neatly piled up and only a few tons of it.

From here you get a slightly different panorama shot looking down the valley, from the CP itself the view is blocked by the vegetation. Document with the required photo's and back to the car for the remaining 4 hours to home.
