#1: Confluence point and mysterious hut near to it

(visited by Jonathan Marten)

28-Aug-2001 -- I'd hoped to be the first visitor to this point - it was unvisited on the confluence website before we had set off on holiday a few days ago. But as it turned out we were beaten to it - by three days (visit #1)! I won't repeat too much about the confluence point: it was easy enough to find through the quarry and up the hill to the east, on a grass slope with the mysterious small hut very close by.

But the quarry was equally interesting. There had obviously been much activity here in the past, producing some sort of dark stone that matched many of the older buildings and bridges in the area. However, all that had obviously finished some years ago, and now the quarry was deserted and quiet. There was still a small building near the entrance road, with a weighbridge outside to accurately account for the loads leaving. Also just outside the door was a portable toilet, looking somewhat newer than the main building, although I didn't dare to look inside it!

Inside the building was the weighbridge scale (which could weigh up to 20 tons, vehicle plus load), some furniture and lots of scattered papers. Among them were notes that looked like records of loads and deliveries, some trade magazines and newspapers, and all of the other junk that accumulates in any working office. There wasn't really time to look through everything, and I didn't want to take anything away - although some of this material should really be recorded for posterity.

But one book still open on the table was the the most interesting, the daily diary telling more about the decline of industry in these parts than any more verbose account could do. The last note had been made on the 7th May 1989, and read simply "No Work". There were no more entries.
