13-Dec-2010 -- While on a road trip from Regina, Saskatchewan Canada to Florida to spend Christmas and New Years with our daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughters, we visited a few confluences. This confluence is not far off Interstate 25 near Wheatland, Wyoming just east of the Laramie Mountains.

After watching a beautiful sunrise as we drove south on Interstate 25, we turned off at Exit 78 in Wheatland to drive the short distance west to Highway 312. Driving south on 312, we turned west when we reached Reservoir Road. At Ayers Road we headed south until we reached 40°N. Nearby was an open gate and an area to leave our vehicle.

It was 7:50 AM local time and 47°F. Very strong winds were blowing from the west. As we parked, cows across the road appeared one by one from behind a long row of big round hay bales. They watched us and seemed curious about what we were doing. They were Black Angus cows. Most ranches in the area had large herds, all seeming to be Black Angus.

It didn't take us long to walk across the stubble field to find the spot ... we did have that strong wind at our backs! A couple of times we had to step across deep furrows which ran the length of the field. We later determined that these were where the runners on the sprinkler irrigation system ran. Irrigation ditches full of water ran along the edge of the fields near Reservoir Road.

Because the wind was so strong we saw Tumbleweeds blowing across the roads in the area. We also watched as a flock of birds stayed almost stationary despite flapping their wings vigorously against the wind. We think that strong winds may be common in this area due to the number of wind farms we observed.

The Laramie Mountains to the west were capped with snow. There were small reminders of a recent snowfall on the ground near the confluence. After getting our confluence photo views, we fought the wind as we walked back to our vehicle, took a few overview photos and some more of the cows. We then drove south, then east to rejoin Interstate 25 at Exit 73 and continued on our trip.
