06-May-2001 -- Degree Confluence Expedition Report, by Julienne Gard

38N 121W lies about twenty minutes E of Stockton in Central California. For the most part, this drive is very scenic. Farms that produce walnuts, cherries, oranges, and strawberries dot the road. A few minutes after passing through a small town, you are connected to the long desolate J-6 highway which conveniently leads you to the confluence. Though this specific area is relatively brown and devoid of life, there is a small deserted house directly across from the point which acts as a rather eerie but helpful marker.

Once we got in the general vicinity, we let the GPS take over. The 121W reading was almost perfect; it was the correct latitude we needed to find. The five of us walked with it until we were stopped by barbed wire. Because we were so close, we felt compelled to drop to the ground and roll to the other side. It turns out the confluence is just a few paces beyond the fence. We then located the exact spot, laid the receiver down in the dead grass, and snapped our picture.

Although the location and landscape may not seem particularly exciting or beautiful, this confluence is a nice one to visit, especially for first-timers, for it has been visited only twice, is simple to locate, and provides you with an opportunity to buy fresh California produce along the way!

We made this visit after attending the annual meeting of the California Geographical Society, in Stockton, Ca.
