02-Jun-2001 -- 39ºN 9ºW - Cadafais, near Lisbon, Portugal.

We discovered the DCP site by coincidence towards the end of May 2001, and were very taken with the idea. The thought of "discovering" the crossings of these conceptual lines, "hidden" to all but their seekers, seemed a fun challenge as well as a pretext to visit parts of the country we are unlikely to travel to.

We were thus happy to find there was an "unclaimed" confluence within 30 kms of our home in Lisbon, so we packed the kids in the car and set off north. We drove along increasingly minor roads until we reached the village of Cadafais where we left the car some 300m from the target spot.

We were in rolling countryside with vineyards and orchards, fairly dry and hot (33ºC) now that summer is here. Using our army map we located the abandoned farm buildings where the track started and walked on up the hill guided by the borrowed GPS and our trusty old Silva compass (we sail, kayak and do some orienteering on bicycles but never with electronics!).

Sod's law seems to apply to this game as it does at sea for, although we were in open countryside, the confluence itself was in the middle of a large, thick patch of brambles. We were not about to "come very close" on our first try, so Paulo walked the GPS into the middle of the bad news for the zero photo and struggled back out... The other photos are taken 20 metres west of the patch.
