02-Aug-2001 -- On this hot summer day my family decided to make a refreshing trip to the Traunsee lake. After we have picked up our friend Peter from his office (he lives close to the Traunsee) I asked my company to make a bypass for 48°N 14°E. This confluence is the closest to my home and my 17th visit. Beforehand I had asked Martin for some instructions and hints.
So we left the Autobahn at Vorchdorf and Peter conducted me by means of a map supplied by ‘Eich- und Vermessungsamt’. According to this map the confluence can be accessed from a field path within a range of about 120m. Martin told me that the confluence is located in a grain or cornfield and therefore we hoped that the particular field had been harvested. At the village of Pernhub we should have turned left but could not find the indicated road. Since we passed a junction some 100m before (NNW – pic4) we turned back and entered the ‘Güterweg Weidinghaid’. There was also a sign to a ‘Jausenstation’ (Austrian farm style snacks and drinks are served, run by farmers).
Just before the last farmhouse we turned to the left onto the unpaved road (pic#4). Fortunately the suspicious field was already harvested and from the 48°N reading we walked towards the confluence. To obtain the ZERO reading was easy and the photos were taken. The famous Traunstein (a must for all genuine Upper Austrians – pic#7) was hidden by the hazy weather conditions. Tractors could be seen and heard from all directions since this is the top harvesting period in Austria. A part of the family was waiting at the car and therefore we had no spare time to talk to the farmers.
This confluence is not as outstanding as some others in Austria. But it is easy to reach and shows a typical farming area in Upper Austria. This kind of settlement consists mainly of single farmhouses located within their fields.
A
detailed map and aerial photo may be obtained from the ‘Upper Austrian GIS system - DORIS’, where the MGI system is used. This link refers to respective WGS84 and so far to the valid confluence. Please note that the aerial photo seems to be old and does not correlate to the actual road layout (see correction above).
