01-Sep-2002 -- Confluence hunting can be absurdly easy or aggravatingly, well, aggravating.

Case in point: 40N, 86W. We set out for the site (30 miles from home) with no maps, only a small yellow GPS. We found it easily; but we didn't bring a camera. (My wife would add here that she remembers suggesting a camera and I had said no, but I deny everything.)

So we returned a week later, camera in hand, and took several pictures. Then we waited three weeks for the rest of the roll of film to be used up, then developed it. The pictures came out Lousy.

We obtained another camera and made plans to visit AGAIN. But meanwhile, someone else had posted their pictures! Ok, I am told we should submit our visit anyway, so here it is. But I did have to rewrite the outstanding narrative I had previously written.

This site lies in a swampy vacant lot on 146th street just east of Highway 37. Nearby is an Ameritech service box which generously provides a paved parking space.

The exact point of confluence lies IN the murky water of the swamp. This does not deter the dedicated confluencer.

Finally, look at the northeast corner of the AAA map of Indianapolis. "X" - literally - "marks the spot!" A coincidence? Or do we have a Confluencer working undercover at the AAA map department?
