24-Dec-2002 -- Many people were visiting my parents' home in Manchester, New Hampshire for the Christmas holiday. A confluence trip appeared to be a fine outing for Christmas Eve, allowing various relatives and acquaintances to be together without being stuck in a house. We knew, of course, that this confluence had been previously visited -- it was the first in the project after all. However, this was a convenient to reach confluence, and some of our party had other business in the nearby town of Peterborough.
Six of us had previously visited at least one confluence, and, while not everyone was exactly eager to go to a confluence, everyone was at least willing. We took three vehicles and drove to Hancock, New Hampshire, regrouping at the Hancock Inn. From here we convoyed the short distance up Depot Road until we were at a turn out a little under half a mile from the confluence. The weather was perfect.
Ben had previously requested that we all wear silly hats; his eyeball hat was by far the silliest.
There was a few inches of snow on the ground, which made the going slippery in spots. We set off, the two GPS units in the lead. Regretfully, Stephanie and Josh turned around due to the slipperiness of the terrain. The rest of us found our way between the trees and open areas down to a boulder at the confluence.
Although Skye (the husky) was the second one to the confluence, she didn't wait to have her picture taken with the group. Instead, she delightedly dug through the snow and found some old deer guts, only a dozen yards to the east (within the accuracy requirement of the confluence). This made a fine snack. Some of the others were tempted by this snack, but they didn't actually have any. This year Skye received all of the items on her Christmas list: snow - over a foot on Christmas, dog walks - the confluence hike, and deer guts - almost at the confluence.
After taking the requisite photographs, we walked back to the cars, and made our way to a restaurant for lunch. |
