#1: Confluence Point from a distance of 85 m

(visited by Heinz-Werner Goetz and Monika Gebhardt)

22-May-2004 -- Over night temperature had dropped below 10° Celsius and enduring rainfall had started, but the confluence trip had been planned for over a week – and so it took place, nevertheless!

The confluence point had to be found at a linear distance of about 90 kilometers and, as usual, only small provincial roads should be used. A few nonessential difficulties arose when my co-driver missed the proper turnoffs twice, but when she had been supplied by a hot cup of coffee coming along with a fine apple pie, the situation changed for the better.

Having passed the famous monastery of Roggenburg, our route mostly led us across the rural districts of the Allgäu and the Ostallgäu, crossed the river Lech and then took us almost to the lakefront of the Ammersee.

At about halfway’s distance between the small villages of Finning and Obermühlhausen, we left our car behind at a parking site at the northern end of the Windachspeicher reservoir (see second picture, lower left quarter), because from there on the road was closed for motorvehicles.

(By the way: who, as a true-born and upright confluence hunter with a minimum of respect for the rights of nature would really be obliged to visit confluences (by hook or by crook, as it were) without walking by his own feet at least for a short distance of just a few hundred meters or even some kilometers?).

In this case, no problem: the confluence point – at (according to our GPS companion) an altitude of 648 m above sea level in the midst of a large hayfield - was located in a very agreeable promenade-distance of 1,1 km from the parking site. As soon as we had reached the point, the rain stopped and allowed us to take the obligatory pictures without problems with our technical equipment.

The excursion was prolonged by a visit of the 2004 edition of the International Pottery Market in Diessen (Ammersee).
