29-Jul-2007 -- This is an easy CP to get to - however it’s located on a highway that is fairly well traveled but a place where you’d hate to break down. It’s located about an hour north of Las Vegas just off highway 93 along the great basin highway. That is true to its name because the country is vast open desert bordered by mountain ranges east and west of you.
The road is as straight as an arrow and with quite spectacular scenery. Well, as spectacular as open desert can be anyway. I parked the car at 37N and walked for about 1.1 miles west until 115W zeroed out. The temperature was hot so I’m glad it wasn’t a 5 mile hike to the CP. The walk was easy due to the open terrain but stay on the high side of the washes you’ll come across.
I didn’t see any wildlife but I’m not surprised, only a crazy human would be out in that heat. I took the required pictures at the CP and stuck around for a few moments and enjoyed the silence and the views. Headed back to the car pretty much the same way. Total distance was 2.4 miles in 1.5 hours. No need to rush considering how hot is was. Bring plenty of water even though it’s a short hike.
