#1: Overview

(visited by Karl Bryk and Heidi Peschl)

24-Apr-2009 -- A weekend away with the Vindobona Hash House Harriers in Glanz an der Weinstrasse in the South Styria gave me the opportunity to introduce my chauffeur Heidi and fellow passenger Birgit to the joys of Confluence Hunting.

The day didn't start too well, with Heidi running out of petrol on the way to pick me up. But after a can of fuel (and the can) purchased at a nearby petrol station and breakfast at Birgit's we set off down the A2 south towards Graz. The trip was uneventful and we turned off towards Fürstenfeld to head for the CP. We reckoned on 30-40 minutes to visit the CP. We had to be in Glanz an der Weinstrasse to lay a flour trail for the Saturday run (if you don't know what I'm taking about, visit the VH3 link above) and we still had to buy beer and soft drinks for the weekend.

So the GPS device was placed (by me) on the dashboard of the car with the Goto function activated. However in order to stop the GPS constantly falling of the dashboard and because of an indentation in the dashboard in which it sat snugly, I rotated the GPS device by 90 degrees and followed the arrow. After many minutes it occurred to me that often when it appeared that we were driving in the direction of the arrows the distance only got less very slowly or even appeared to get further away. But surely that was just the mind playing tricks of a result of the terrain!

To cut a long story, or rather a long drive, short, after over an hour of driving in a big circle someone (not me) had the bright idea of rotating the GPS device and it was like magic (the person concerned is considered by some to be a witch). It started working normally again. Shortly after we were within 500 metres of the CP, so we cut our losses and parked the car and walked through the woods to the CP.

We arrived from above, behind the railway line. So we took the usual photos with both Heidi and Birgit taking it very seriously (not). A short walk back to the car and we were heading for our original destination arriving a bit late but not too late to prepare for the weekend.

So thanks to my fellow passengers for their patience. I think they enjoyed it and I still wonder if its just a problem with my cheap Gecko 200 device or a general problem? Maybe someone else will try it and let us know.
