  49°N 9°E (visit #13)

#1: The confluence of 49° N and 9° E

(visited by Henk Pouwels)

12-Apr-2003 -- This visit should be counted as visit 3 ½ because the visit is in time between visit #3 (2002) and visit #4 (2004). I am to blame for this submission 6 ½ year after the visit. But from the visit point of view I can see in the future.

At the end of my career I travelled several times from The Netherlands to an aerospace industry near Friedrichshafen in the south of Germany. This time I returned via Stuttgart took the “autobahn” A81 to the exit for Pleidelsheim and followed for about 12 km more or less the river Neckar to Besigheim. From there to Freudental and through Hohenhaslach to the parking at 700 m straight line from the CP.

I started to follow the inviting broad and clean road but after a while I was forced to go cross-country through the wood. Later I found a shorter path, with blue-white markers, between the CP and the parking, as many other visitors did after me. At the beginning of this path is the information panel reported by several visitors. The trajectory and the position of this panel is plotted over a faint GoogleEarth image.

The CP is located at the side of a crossing of four forest roads, which are shown in the North, East, South and West photographs. The analogue photograph of the screen of the GPS was poor due to reflection from the sky. Digitizing and image processing revealed the CP reading, only 0.00002°N and 0.00001° E in error. The recording by the GPS contains two fixes with 2 x 5 zero’s. EPE is calculated from a series of 480 fixes in 8 minutes of time to be 7 m.

Although all other photographs show a cold and naked world it is already springtime.

About the region: this is one of the regions where the Germans produce very good wine. I found one of them in my cellar at home with the village of Hohenhaslach mentioned at the label. Mark the year 2005.
