03-Aug-2011 -- Having completed a couple of visits at the weekend with Shawn Fleming down on 51N, I find myself back up at 54N and in the vicinity of 2W. I've not been here for a while, I have a few hours spare and it's a nice day, so why not?

Park up at the car park by the yachting club, and follow the reservoir around to the left, through the gate and along the far shore. As expected for August the ferns are waist/chest high and will be a lot of work.

This time I decided to be a little more intelligent in how I approached the climb. I knew from looking at the area in google earth that following up the river path ought to provide an easier route to gain most of the altitude.

As I started to do so, I found "paths", which in reality are run-offs for the large amounts of water when it rains very heavily here. As I was heading for an area that is officially a bog I guess that happens quite a lot.

This gets me to the plain without too much effort, then the heather takes over with a bit more of a climb. However I am at the point after on 45 minutes of walking, significantly faster than anything I have done before.

It is though, just as wet underfoot. Carefully make my way to the required spot and document what I can see. As you will notice from the pictures, even though this is the middle of summer it really is green and wet.

I try to follow my route on the way back out (without putting the Garmin into track back mode). It's surprising how easy it is to be out by 50 yards or so, giving you a very hard slog through the ferns because you missed the track. I ended up going down to the stream bed and crossing over!

On the way back home I stopped to take the "locating" shots, from about 5 miles away, the CP is "over there" at the top of the hills.
