(visited by Ben Manthey)

18-May-2008 -- It's been a while since my last confluence. I'm back at my companies plant in The Netherlands to upgrade some equipment. Actually since my last confluence I've spend almost four months in The Netherlands working on various projects and systems. I don't expect to be back here for quite a while as I have new projects to work on in our new facility in Nanjing China. Since this is really my first trip here with a whole weekend off I've decided to spend Sunday trying to visit a few more countries and visiting another confluence.

I started by mapping the route from my hotel in Veenendaal to the confluence in Google Earth and saving the route as a .KMZ file. I then used psvisualizer.com to convert the .KMZ file to a .GPX file which I could download into my GPS with g7towin. This method is not very convenient or fast but it is all free.

I expected it to take about 3 1/2 hours to get to the confluence and I had no other plans for the day so I didn't get started until 10 in the morning. The weather was nice, it wasn't raining and the combination of my GPS and the printed instructions worked well and the driving went well with one exception. While I was approaching the town of Roermond I discovered that the entire highway was closed and I was forced to detour onto city streets. Since my GPS has no mapping functions this caused me to add about half an hour to my driving, actually this was even worse when I was returning as it took me nearly an hour to find my way back to the highway.

Once I had found the confluence I took the required pictures and then ate the lunch that I had brought. The return trip was uneventful except for the detour through Roermond and I was back at my hotel in time for dinner. Altogether it was a pleasant way to spend a day visiting the south part of The Netherlands as well as my first visit to Belgium and Luxembourg.
