#1: Looking N up small embankment

(visited by Chris Rice)

23-Jun-2014 -- I have been working on a mobile data collection application that uses geolocation services, and have been undergoing rigorous accuracy testing. Today, I had some work going on nearby this confluence, so I decided to check it out and see if I could dial in my phone to be as accurate as possible.

This confluence at 40N 105W is very easy to get to because it is roughly a 1/2 mile west of Interstate 25, and about 75' from the edge of HWY 7 in Broomfield County. I'm sure it is one of the most visited confluences in the state, if not the entire region!

The confluence itself, however, appears to be on private land, which is an agricultural field (hay?). Presumably, I was trespassing while capturing this point, but the chainlink fence is not intact nearby, maybe a result of people doing the same thing I was. I parked my truck on the shoulder of the road and made my way down the small embankment.

Once I got close, I had to adjust my position ever so slightly to dial in the best precision. However, this being an Android-based Samsung Galaxy Note II, the GPS is by no means as accurate as a professional mapping-grade receiver, so gaining exacting precision is nearly impossible down beyond the 6th decimal position. I was able to get up to 5 decimal places, which is as accurate as you would ever need to be.

It would be interesting to note the changes happening nearby, especially the Northwest Parkway's influence on development. I'm sure much has changed since Dr. Kerski visited the confluence over a decade ago!
